Internet in Egypt: choose your connection before you land

Pick one primary route before departure, decide whether a local number matters, and save an offline arrival fallback.

A safe Egypt connection plan chooses the main route before departure and keeps one arrival fallback offline.

For a short data-first trip, compare your carrier’s roaming offer with a travel eSIM before departure. Choose an Egyptian tourist line when a local number, ordinary calls or SMS are required. Do not rely on unverified airport Wi-Fi; save the address, route and connection instructions offline.

Start with the need that can disqualify an option

Do not choose by brand or headline allowance. Choose the branch whose missing capability would break the trip.

DATA FIRST

Prepare a travel eSIM before departure

  • Your unlocked compatible phone can add eSIM
  • You do not need an Egyptian number or ordinary SMS

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Use home-carrier roaming

  • Your carrier shows an acceptable current roaming offer
  • Keeping the home line as the data line matters more than changing SIMs

LOCAL NUMBER

Buy an Egyptian tourist line

  • Local calls or SMS are part of the job
  • You can visit an official operator shop with the required identity document

Compare the four routes

No route is a universal winner; current terms belong to the provider.

Prepare the route before the aircraft door opens

  1. BEFORE PAYMENT

    Set the disqualifiers

Write down whether you need a local number, ordinary SMS, hotspot use or only mobile data. Verify each requirement on the current provider surface.

  2. BEFORE DEPARTURE

    Install, save and separate

Follow the selected plan’s activation instructions, keep the home SIM configuration noted, and save the hotel address, route, order instructions and support link offline.

  3. AFTER LANDING

Test one route at a time

Turn on only the intended data line and roaming setting for that plan. If it fails, use the saved fallback instead of deleting an eSIM or changing several settings at once.

What the Egypt-specific evidence changes

NTRA says a foreign customer buying a local mobile line must attend an operator branch with an original valid passport and residency document, sign in person, and accept that line validity is tied to residency. Short-stay document handling can differ at a tourist counter, so confirm the current requirement with the operator before joining a queue. [ntra-sim-sales]

Vodafone Egypt says its Tourist Line is sold at its airport store and retail branches. Cairo Airport lists Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and Telecom Egypt outlets in particular terminals. Those pages prove an in-person route, not current stock, opening hours, price or guaranteed registration. [vodafone-tourist] [cairo-airport-shops]

NTRA launched local eSIM service in Egypt in December 2024, but that announcement does not prove that a foreign visitor can buy a local eSIM remotely. Letisim plan availability and instructions belong to the live Egypt catalog; its network and quality evidence remains unverified and is not turned into a coverage claim here.
